Sorry for the delay. Gavin is doing good and did great with the line placement. We were able to place a double lumen catheter, which although doubles his infection risk, it gives us another post to run blood products and meds through. It also give the possibility of locking the one side of the line with ethanol alcohol, which can help cut down on infection. We were using the ethanol lock previously but due to Gavin's dextrose dependence I could only let it dwell a few minutes before Gavin's blood sugar would drop and have to hook him back up to his dextrose.

We should be coming home soon. There has been some difficulty getting the sensitivity for the yeast (what med it will respond to), as it was a mixed yeast. Who knows -- it's all done in the lab.

Anyway, we should be home soon and it's a good thing because we just really need to go home and live a little.

Thanks for helping us through the week.

Not much to report on. It was another long hard day for all of us. Gavin lost 4 IV's in the past 24 hours sending his sugars all over the place and completly stressing out his little body. He has had a rough time this evening with being so exausted he has been unable to keep his temp up and also his heart rate has been dipping down in the 50's.

We should be going to the OR tomorrow to get a new line placed, pending the cultures stay negative and the echo that was done today is normal.

Please, please, please pray for our strength tomorrow. I'm so tired. Madison went home this evening with my mother, which gives her a much needed break from the chaos around here.

    Karen

Today was a long day. We found out this morning that Gavin's blood cultures that were drawn before they broke his line came back positive for 2 different organisms. The first was most likely from his bowels and the second was a yeast. Yeast are horrible infections as they can be difficult to treat. The line would most likely have come out anyway because yeast growth almost always equals a pulled line. Because of the yeast growth, tomorrow Gavin will have his eyes and heart checked as yeast likes to hide in all sorts of places within the body.

His time at the OR yesterday evening was uneventful and he actaully did not have to be intubated, which was the first time he made it through with just an O2 mask. My baby is growing up. snif. snif. He has been in pretty good spirits today besides that fact that we lost two IV's today each requiring several sticks to replace. Gavin's access issues and dextrose dependence make it very scary not having a central line in place. Pending negative cultures we should be able to go the the OR on Thursday.

Madison was such a good little girl today. She watched a few movies this morning and took a 2 hour nap for me, which is just amazing! Please remember to pray for our little gal as this is just as hard on her if not more than us.

    Comments:
Lisa and Michael:  We will keep Madi in our prayers especially this week. She is a strong little girl and this is teaching her so much love and compassion! Have faith! You are a wonderful loving family and she will grow up to be nothing less, thanks to you! God bless- the Walk family
Matthew and Amy:  Sorry to hear that Gavin's Central Line broke and will need replacing again, but it sounds like you would have needed to replace it anyway. We're glad that you have been looking on the bright side, and seeing the positive in little things, like the fact that Gavin didn't have to be intubated. We're praying for you and Maddi, that you continue to find blessings, even in the small things.
Amy Basciani:  We are praying for you.Sorry i have not been in touch. I think of you often and hope this will get better for you. we will keep all of you in our prayers. We will be in alot next week. If you are still there, i will check to see if you need anything.
    Amy
Ruby:  JESUS KEEP THIS FAMILY IN YOUR HOLY GRIP!!
Randy & Marilyn:  Lord, fill them with your peace and strength for this day...Adam & Karen, we're praying and trusting and beleiving for your miracle! Anything can Happen!!
Cindy Heintz:  Gavin ad Family, keeping you all in our heart, thoughts and Prayers and hope everything clears up quiickly.
    F R O G ( forever rely on god) and B+
Mary Alice Carpenter:  Well thank God they found out what is causing the current problems and can treat it. Try to think of the positive. When they can't find anything makes you wonder what is happening. Give Madison a big hug and kiss and tell her she is such a good girl. God Bless you all and prayers are said everyday for all of you.

This morning at 3am Gavin spiked a high fever and we were admitted to duPont. In the typical Gavin Owens run of things, while down in the ER getting labs drawn Gavin central line broke. We are off to the OR tonight to have the "stub" removed as there is no way to keep it sterile or clamped off.

So as of right now the plan, as always, is to wait, wait and wait some more! We cannot get a new line placed for at least 2 more days. He most likely had an infected line so we will also be waiting on the initial blood culture that was drawn before the line was broken.

Also, we are in a VERY small room. Aw man. That's all I have to say about that.

    Comments:
Lisa and Michael:  You are all in our prayers, as always. Hang in there! -- the Walk family
Sandra DiCesare:  Hi Gavin, This is Anthony, yes I guess we are yeast brothers!!!! We are on 3F, were are you? They are pulling my line today. My Mommy and Daddy really hope you feel better soon. Thinking of you!!! oxox
Fava Family:  Sorry to hear that you guys are back at the hospital again. We will pray for Gavin to get better quickly and for his procedure to go well so you can all get home. Our prayers are with your family always!
The Hannum's:  Let us add our Grrrrr! to Debbie's... and pray strength, peace, grace and even joy to break through & faith to rise in you- that you might hold on to the hope that God is who He says He is in spite of what is in front of your eyes right now...
The Rich Family:  We'll be praying for all of you.
Ruby:  OH JESUS! HAVE MERCY PLEASE ON THIS FAMILY!
Katrina:  Our son has SBS, g-tube, central line and I can empathize with the infections, line problems, etc. We are in the hospital once a month. My stomach gets in knots when I read about Gavin's rollercoaster rides. I do a cheer for him when he is doing so well. Just know there is another mother riding the same ride!!!
Debbie Seymour:  Grrrrr! I hear ya and we'll be very specific when we pray-how long...

I can't believe I'm saying this but we are home! It is crazy to think just how sick he was just a few days ago. That's Gavin for ya! Gavin continues to improve and although not yet recovered is stable enough for us to care for him at home. His Hemoglobin and Platelets are still low but stable and his spleen has begun to shrink. He is still rather swollen but I can certainly see a difference from a few days ago.

Some things to keep in your prayers are:

    - His liver to go back to a more comfortable size
    - His body would continue to make blood
    - That the line infection is effectively treated
    - We would be able to regain the grounds we made on his feeds
    - Our family would once again readjust to being home and
    - For Madison to kick her virus!

Thanks for helping us thought this past week!

    Comments:

We will pray for all his needs...and can't believe Madison is sick now! Wow I know they say God only gives you what you can handle but sometimes I think he gets carried away. Take care until we talk again.
Kirsten Yarnall:  What wonderful news!!! The kids are standing here with me as I read this aloud. We are all praising God for his miracle touch. We will continue to pray for Gavins full recovery and also for Madison. We love you guys. God bless.

Gavin's labs last night showed that his platelets went down slightly and are right at the transfusion point but we are going to hold off on giving him any due to the fact that he look SO MUCH better! His hemoglobin also had been holding its own. His CRP (sign of inflammation) has gone down from 45 to 21. We may possibly be coming home in the next few days. He is still running fevers and we have not begun to feed him yet, but I need to emphasize that he looks SO GOOD! After a few rounds of lasix he lost a lot of the fluid though his liver still remains so huge.

So things are looking up. His doctor keeps saying how this is the sickest he has ever been. Kinda scary, but he made it through once again!

    Comments:

Gavin seems to have turned a corner after receiving the blood. He has been awake all afternoon and although not as active as before, seems to be pretty comfortable. We will check his blood levels again tonight to see if he is holding his own. We started to drain out his J tube as well as his G providing him so more relief.

This afternoon we actaully tried to sit him in his bouncer but it was just a bit to much for him as his poor belly is so huge making it hard to breath.

I think the inflammation process might be coming to an end but I'm tyring not to get my hopes up. We will check his CRP levels tonight which will tell us how inflamed his body is. Two days ago his CRP was around 45 normal being 0.4.

Thanks for praying -- I think He may be listening!

Just got word this morning that Gavin's blood counts dropped again. They are in the process of giving him another infusion of platelets, followed by lasix and then about 1/2 the blood he needs due to his current state and then they will transfuse the other half this afternoon.

He is still running fevers and is very uncomfortable. Pray that he can just sleep through all the people in and out of the room today running the transfusions. Easier said than done.

We had a long night but Gavin seems to be a bit more stable this morning. Yesterday evening was very scary to watch with all the bleeding and swelling but he did fine with the platelet infusion and now the bleeding has stopped. His liver and spleen continue to enlarge stretching his little belly to the limit. He most likely with receive more blood today and maybe more platelets if needed. We also have been giving him Lasix to pull the excess fluid out of his body, which provides him some relief with his breathing.

His doctors came in today and didn't have too much to say besides that he is very sick and that his blood works shows just how crazy inflammed his body is. They plan right now is to just support him with blood products, TPN, dextrose and pain meds. He continues to run fevers though they are somewhat responding to Motrin.

Thanks for the prayers -- keep them coming!

It has been a long horrible day for Gavin and the rest of our family. Gavin is really struggling. He spent all of his day just laying on his back in his crib with his eyes glazed over. This morning he woke up with his abdomen so distended they decided to x-ray it to see what was causing the distension. The x rays showed that his liver and spleen are both very enlarged filling most of his abdomen and pushing his bowels down. He is still is very uncomfortable and despite the fact that his fevers are coming down his heart rate remains very high due to his pain.

We also got word that his platelets dropped to dangerous levels and he began to have nose bleeds and have blood in his stool this evening. Tonight we are in the process of transfusing platelets, which required an IV, which took 4 sticks. His hemoglobin also took a large drop but we are going to wait until morning to give him blood.

His RSV continues to worsen and hopefully has reaching the peak before going away. He was having some issues breathing this morning, which was only made worse by his distended belly.

Madison most likely has RSV as well and has been very sick and greeted me this morning with lots of vomit and coughing! We are praying that she can fight it off with ease!

It's just not been a good day here. On a positive note the doctors feel that we may have the line infection under control, though we are still waiting on negative cultures. The problems that we are having now are mainly due to his systemic inflammatory response which was just have to let his body battle out.

Thanks for all the emails and posts today -- so encouraging to me. I sit and check my email probably every hour!

    Will update with anything new.

    Comments:
Debbie Heisey:  Praying for your family. I know that God has His arms around Gavin, comforting him like no one else can. Please give Madi a hug for me. Please tell her that I am thinking about her and praying for her to feel better real soon! I have so enjoyed spending time with Gavin and Madi on those early Sunday mornings. I am also praying for greater grace for you and Adam. It is certainly not our own strength that gets us through, but we have access to a strength and power that we just can't wrap our brains around. Continue to be blessed and be safe in Him...ttfn! ~Deb Heisey
Sarah:  Our prayers are with all of you! Connor prays for
Erica Fisher:  I am glad you are hyper-checking email. It is so easy to feel disconnected and discouraged in the isolation of the hospital environment.

Theresa Decker:  Reading your blog is like reading a novel and wating to get to the part where it's
Bill& Ruby:  you are not in this battle alone, we place your hands in Jesus's hands.
Fava Family:  We will continue to strongly pray for Gavin's body to heal and for his comfort. We will pray for Madison to get better as well and know that God will give you and Adam the added strength needed at this time.

Liz DeFrain:  We will pray for all of you this morning at our Ladies' Breakfast. Hang in there. We love you!
Aunt Pat:  Praying for God to give you strength Karen. Gavin is such a little fighter. Praying even harder for him to overcome this and fast. If you need me to babysit Madi, I am available, whether she is sick or not. I hope youre not mad at me for giving her chocolate milk...but she likes it!!!And I can't say no to those big blue eyes!!! We love you all and pray diligently every day and everytime we think of you! Love, Aunt Pat and Uncle Don, and Manda and Missy

Things are still not going very well. Gavin has begun his inflammatory response, which is very painful for him. For those who do not know, Gavin's body basically attacks itself in response to being ill or other stresses. His blood counts drop, he swells, his liver painfully enlarges and he has uncontrolled fevers. He seems to be responding a little to fever meds but they only provide him little relief. This process usually resolves within 5 days or so.

Still no word on blood cultures from his line. Its hard to say if they will grow on not since he was on IV antibiotics for more than 24 hours prior to getting the culture.

We all are very tired and frustrated at this point as there is nothing we can do for Gavin but wait until his body calms down. Please pray that Gavin can find comfort and rest!

    Karen

Nothing is ever easy. They went ahead and did the TPA on Gavin's central line and he spiked a fever of 104. They did get a culture from the line so we will just have to wait and see if it grows and what it grows. It can be assumed that we will not be coming home tomorrow as I had thought. Stinks. Stinks. Stinks.

Good Morning -- or is it evening? -- or maybe lunch time? Can you tell I'm a little tired? Gavin had a good night. He slept fairly well, though feeds were stop due to his belly distension. He has remained fever free since receiving the antibiotics, which leads us to believe that our problem is a line infection and he just happened to be carrying the RSV when they swabbed him yesterday. He does have a cold so he most likely has a very mild case of RSV, which if he didn't have a central line would be barely noticeable.

Gavin's central line was extremely sluggish last week and then on Sunday the line released the clot into Gavin's blood stream. The thought is that the clot had some bacteria on it leading to the fever and infection. We also had an xray done last night to check the line and make sure it is intact and also there are no clots in his lungs, which came back fine. Today we will be going down to have a dye study of his line where they inject die and watch it move through the line using a live xray like machine.

The problem we are having is that we are unable to get blood from the line to get a culture but if we TPA the line (de-clot the line) there is a chance that it could release all the bacteria, that hasn't been effected by the antibiotics, right into the blood stream.

So, hopefully all will go well today, we will be able to get the culture and then we will just wait for our 2 negative cultures to come back.

    Thanks for the prayers!

Gavin was admitted this morning to duPont with fever and now we know he has RSV and a possible line infection. We are all very tired right now and this is just not how we wanted to bring in the New Year. I will update when we learn anything new.
