Gavin's warmer is here! It was delivered to our home today and it is so beautiful! I never thought I'd feel so much emotion about a piece of machine. Thanks to Pro2 of King of Prussia for making this happen. This is the only durable medical equipment provider that was willing to provide us with this warmer. Gavin continues to do well and we pray that he will continue at home now that we can keep him warm.

Well.... there is not much new to report besides the fact that we are all just so drained and tired both physically and emotionally. Gavin is doing good. He continues to get chubby! He just looks so great!

It's kinda a weird place to be in... we are so happy that he is looking so good but we are frequently reminded of the medical technology that is making him look this good. We often wonder when the day will come when we can get rid of some of these wires and tubes. There are times that I forget what it is like to cuddle a baby without alarms going off and tubes being pulled and knotted.

For now we are spending our days being entertained by Gavin and his mischievous yet sweet spirit. He is learning how to set off alarms and we have resorted to placing his temperature probe on his forehead so that he will not rip it off his belly. Madi is running this hospital. We walk up and down the halls and everyone knows her name! She quickly befriends all the children in the playroom and has all the nursing staff twisted around her finger. Madi tells me she's going to work and makes her way out to the nurses station and sits in front of the computer.

Again, I thought we were coming home tomorrow but there have been some delays but I think we should be home by the end of the week!

I wanted to add that the warmer should be at our home soon. It is taking a bit longer than I had expected. Hopefully there will be a smooth transition of it shipping and being installed at our home.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers! They are working!

    Comments:
Mary Alice Carpenter:  Gavin looks so good. What a living doll! Maybe he is part Indian with the termometer on his forehead! LOL What a joy Madi must be adding to everyone's life's. Prayers continue and faith will get you through.
Lisa and Michael:  Gavin looks wonderful!!! We are so happy to hear and see that he is doing so well. Go God! We will continue to keep your family in our prayers. God bless you!
    Heather LaBombard:  Gavin looks GREAT!!!
John Spencer:  It is wonderful news to hear that Gavin doing better. Like many stories in the Bible, the time after the trial is always better then before the trial. I hope that you keep your faith and spirits up (like up). The good times are coming.
Matthew and Amy:  We love the new picture! What a difference a few weeks have made for Gavin. Its great that the kids are able to keep you entertained during your long hospital stay. Looking forward to your return home with you. Have a great week.
Randy & Marilyn:  What a handsome boy! His smile is contagious! We pray you'll be coming home this week. Know you're in our thoughts and prayers.
Terri & Bruce:  GAVIE LOOKS AWESOME!!! Give Madi a hug for us!! Continuing to pray and excited that you may be home this week...thanks for the updates..we look for them daily...blessings
The Rich Family:  What a journey you guys are on but try to keep looking up and know He is with you all the time. He has gone before you and loves you very much. We hope all goes very well so you can come home. Our prayers are continually with all of you.
Fava Family:  We are so happy that Gavin is making progress. Our family faithfully continues to pray for Gavin and for your whole family.
Sue Kane:  Nancy sent me the address for your journal. So good to hear Gavin is plumping up and the warmer is coming! My thoughts are with you and your beautiful family as you keep on keepin on.

Gavin received a new central line today. His fevers are gone and we have been having negative blood cultures. However, we are still in isolation until further notice. Gavin is doing ok. His weight continues to go up although it has slowed quite a bit. He has been having problems with his temp and heart rate the past few days but our doctor assured us that he is ok and is just being "Gavin."

Things are pretty stressful around here. Sometimes the things that we want aren't the easiest things to achieve...like keeping our family together. We are doing it because it is what we want yet on the other hand it has been so difficult. Madi and I will be coming home for a bit tomorrow to get the mail and water the plants. Madi is so excited to see her room and toys and has been talking about our adventure all night.

I thought that we would be coming home this weekend but it looks like we may be here a bit longer. This really stinks!!!

    Comments:
Terri & Bruce:  It was soooo good to see the 2 of you on Saturday when you stopped by the church. Let us know if there is anything we can do or if you need anything...we'll be in touch and are continuously praying...love ya

Lisa and Michael:  You are all in our prayers! Blessings to you all and may Gavin continue to improve and may you all be home again together soon. God bless!
John Spencer:  Praying that Gavin will continue to get better. There is a bigger plan in all that is happening. What may at the time seem like a setback, may just be the next step towards that miracle we are all praying for. Susan and I will be praying for the whole Owens family. :-)
Matthew and Amy:  Although you may not be coming home this weekend, things are so much better than anyone thought just a couple of weeks ago. For that we are thankful. Glad to hear that Gavin is getting over his infections and that you get a little break from the hospital today.
Stone Family:  We continue to pray, so glad to hear about the fevers, Our 4 year, Amanda has been praying specifically about that.
Lisa Hathaway:  Ok, this is frustratingly funny...my message keeps getting cut off...praying for you all! Praying for rest!

Gavin continues to get stronger and BIGGER every day. Today was a very tough day as we are still dealing with issues around his line infection and other things. This morning I was told that we were going to pull the line and was pretty bummed about that. However, our FABULOUS doctor came and told me this evening that we can save the line as the latest positive culture was a different infection. Bad News...yet another different infection...Good News we get to keep the line.

We are getting pretty tired around here and we are so ready to come home. Hopefully very soon!!!!

    Comments:
Lauren & kids:  Good news, Karen!
Matthew and Amy:  We love the new picture of Gavin! He looks so much livlier than in his last pictures. That is great to see. We'll continue to pray that he get over his infections soon so that your family can finally come home.
Marculo Family:  We've been praying for Gavin daily...May God continue to bless and give strength to all of you!The Lord is faithful!
Mark & KayAnn:  We thank God for all the small rays of hope that keep breaking through even in the midst of the difficulties. Karen and Adam may you not feel the roller coaster ride but we pray that your emotions stay in the balance of all news. May the Lord help you hold your peace so that your strength remains undrained. And may the Lord continue to help Gavin overcome every obsticle until the Lord brings complete healing to his body.
Stone Family:  Read the update about the infection yesterday so that's what the focus of our prayer has been. We will continue to pray for your strength and his!
fava fam:  Gavin looks like he is full of energy. Keep the faith guys and trust God, you will be home before you know it.

Oh what a weekend... Overall Gavin is doing great! We have not seen him looking this good in so long. His weight is up and he has his energy back. On the down side he is still fighting the infection. His cultures have grown some pretty weird stuff most of which has been killed by the however one of his cultures has grown a Vancomycin resistant bacteria. Vanco is one of the strongest antibiotics out there and when the bacteria is resistant to this is can create some problems.

The infection appears to be in his line and there is a possibility that he may have to have his line removed. This just really stinks. He is doing so great right now and to have to remove the line will a challenge for him.

Because of this type of infection we were placed in isolation. It would just be easier at this time if we did not have visitors, at least until we can get the infection cleared up.

Hopefully we will be coming home soon. The warmer should be at our house by the end of the week. For now we just have to get rid of this darn infection!

    Comments:
John Spencer:  God has an awesome plan for Gavin. God's timing is never early or late, but just at the right time. Gavin's time is coming. I will be praying that Gavin continues to get better.
Carrie-Anne & crew:  Continued prayers and wishes to you. Gavin is a sweet boy. We are praying for healing and blessings. Energy and weight gain-two really awesome things
Matthew and Amy:  We're so glad to hear that Gavin is gaining weight again and that you might be coming home soon :) That is such better news than what the doctors were preparing you for. We'll pray for the infection to clear up soon.
Randy & Marilyn:  We'll be praying this week! It was so good to see you last week. Gavin looked great! Praying for continued weight gain for him and total and complete healing of this infection so you can all come home again. . . and praying for strength for you both as you care for him. Love you guys!
Fava Family:  Strongly praying that Gavin's body will be able to fight off this infection. We are so happy to hear that he is gaining weight and getting his energy back! Hoping and praying that you will soon all be home together as a family.

    GREAT NEWS!

We got a call today saying that Gavin's warmer will be ready to bring home next week. Can you even believe it? We are so happy, words cannot express how grateful we are to be able to give this to Gavin and allow him to be at home. We have no idea when we will be able to come home as there are still many issues that need to be addressed with Gavin's health right now.

Everyone needs to know what a miracle this is. We have been trying all year to get this for Gavin with no luck. With just one call this happened within 2 weeks. Just as Adam and I were struggling to find hope God stepped in and said Here I am, I haven't forgot about you and the future that I have for Gavin. He is always just in time...not to soon and never to late!

Overall Gavin is doing fairly well. He has started with some re-feeding syndrome, which is the bodies response to increase caloric intake after a period of starvation. The electrolytes become imbalanced and fluid retention occurs. This is what Gavin is currently experiencing. He looks so chubby this morning, unfortunaley it is not good weight. He was taken off his TPN to prevent any cardiac issues and was started on IV fluid to try to correct the imbalance.

Yesterday Gavin's hemoglobin was 8.2 and this morning it has dropped to 6.5. This is a huge drop considering Gavin is not loosing blood. He will be transfused today and probably tomorrow the Hematology team will take a look at him and try to figure why he is not able to make adequate RBC's.

Our talk with the doctor yesterday went well. Although it was a hard topic to discuss, his doctor reassured us that the hospital is here to support us in anyway. We will most likely be here for an extended time and the Doctor stated that he will not discharge Gavin without a warmer, so this really needs to happen. Once he is discharged we will head up to Columbia in New York to see the metabolic team there.

Things are going so well with Madi and Adam down here. Thanks to all our visitors this weekend. It was great to see our family and friends!

    Comments:
Betsy and Ray:  We just want you to know that you and your family are in our prayers, may God give you the strength for each new day.
Sean Davie:  My parents have been attending morning star fellowship and sent your web page link to me. My heart goes out to your family. My family is praying for you and I have shared this prayer request with my church here in Georgia.

    Numbers 6:24-26
    The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine upon you,
    And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you,
    And give you peace.
Jenn:  As always it was so great spending the afternoon with you Gavi, and Madi! My heart is filled with love for you everyday..hang in there..a miracle is in sight...all my love
    Jenn
Mary Alice Carpenter:  Happy Belated Mother's Day. You indeed are a very special and blessed Mother. You have two beautiful children and may God carry you through these tough times. We hope New York will have the answers for sweet little Gavin.
Lisa and Michael:  HAPPY MOTHERS DAY KAREN! You are an amazing Mom and we are so proud of you. We are praying for Gavin and the whole family. Thank you for all your updates. Much Love, God bless- Lisa and Michael

Seymours:  Wishing you a blessed Mother's Day, Karen!
Still believing for great things- healing, favor, grace, and all that you need :)!!!
Fava Family:  Happy Mother's Day Karen. You truly deserve it. We are strongly praying for God to deliver a miracle for Gavin's health to improve. We are also praying that you receive the warmer that Gavin so desperately needs. Love and blessings to you and your beautiful family.

I'm not really sure what to give as an update on Gavin as we are just not real sure where things are going from here. This is the worst the doctors have ever seen Gavin and because of his malnutrition we are just not real sure how his body is going to react to the re-feeding and increased calories. He has been pretty lethargic most of the day with some burst of energy with big smiles. The smallest activity tires him so quickly so for the most part I'd rather him just rest. Our doctor will be sitting down with Adam and I in the next day or so to discuss and prepare for the directions Gavin may go in and to inform us of the decisions we need to make as far as medial intervention. Please pray that we can make good decisions and that we will know what is best for Gavin.

Gavin is now on 24 hour daily TPN infusion and also we are trying to use his digestive system as much as he can tolerate. He is running at 10cc's an hour with 1/2 strength formula. He is currently receiving 212 calories per Kilogram, which is more than double what a healthy child would need to grow. His weight so far has not changed much. He is just a little over the 10lb mark. The process of letting him grow needs to be taken slowly this time as his body is so wasted that feeding him more could actaully make him worse. So far he is doing ok and hopefully this will continue.

Madi has been staying with me here at the hospital and let me tell you....the Lord must have his hand on her because she has been doing so well! Adam takes her back to the RM house at night to sleep with him and he brings her here in the morning on his way to work.

I added some pictures of him so people could see first hand how he is doing. I am aware that they are sad to look at but I think it might help those who are not able to see him in person get a feel for the level of prayer he needs.

We will update if anything changes...

Unfortunately the time has come for Gavin to be admitted to the hospital. This was a decision that Adam and I made with his Doctor, as Gavin has been on a downward spiral for the last few weeks. His stay is indefinite as we have no choice but to let him live under a warmer and grow for a time. This is such a rough situation for us as we have been together as a family for over a month now and now we will have to be apart once again. Please pray that I will be able to find a balance between wanting to be with Gavin at his bedside and also have the strength to be a mommy to Madison and a wife to Adam.

We are willing to do what ever it takes to have Gavin be well but it just sucks (pardon my words) to have to do something that you just don't want to do, like pack up and live in a hospital room with another sick screaming child yet alone my own!

On a wonderful note, this week we welcomed a new baby boy into our family! My sister in law had her second little boy, Isaac Keifer Owens! We send our love to them as they enjoy their new addition to their family.

When I see both of you on the stage, worshiping the Lord with your voices and talents, despite the heartache and worry with Baby Gavin. You are in my prayers. May God continue to use you for His glory, and I pray for a quick hospital stay this time, one that will strengthen and heal Gavin completely. God Bless.

only for Gavin, but your entire family. I know this must be difficult for everyone. I am praying that Gavin will thrive and grow. I know this must be hard for Madi to have Gavin in the
hospital and mommy with him. I am sure that God will give you the strength for whatever may come your way.

Today was another long day down at duPont. Madi and I took Gavin down today to be transfused. I was hopeing that would pep him up a bit but he is still pretty lathargic. On the positive side he has a little color now. That's always nice to see! Gavin's weight is down below 11 lbs again. We have to put some fat on him!

We are looking foward to a quiet weekend. Adam and I will be at my parents house puting together a swing set (Well, more Adam than me.) Gotta love "normal life" time!

Gavin's GJ procedure went well and we were able to come home that same day. We have come to a very different place in Gavin's care and treatment. In the past we always had some type of plan and for the most part have had a "if this doesn't work then we will..." type plan. At this point, we need this to work. We no longer have another route to go. We have done everything and that is a very scary place to be at, as he is sill not progressing. We started the feeds and for the most part he seems to be doing ok excepte he seems to be just stooling the feed right back out. His new tube, which I will link a pic of for those who are not familiar with a GJ, has an additional port to the stomach which I can continuously vent into a bag, which gives him a lot a relief from pain. The doctors told me yesterday that starting up the feeds will take a little time since he had not had anything pass though his system in a while.

Gavin has been very lethargic the past few days and when is is awake just seems to be wanting to go back to sleep. This in part is probably due to his anemia but also he it just very weak right now.

I have gotten in contact with a manufacturer of a warming bed and they actaully got back to me with some interest in Gavin. If we could give Gavin a warmer to sleep under this would mean a drastic change in his health for the better. It's hard to get my hopes up for this but please pray for some grace from the FDA and manufacturer!

    Comments:
Mary Alice Carpenter:  Thank God the procedure went well. The doctor's are right...the key word is patience. As for the warming bed...drive them crazy until they get you one! Persistance persistance persistance. God Bless you all and our prayers continue.
Lisa and Michael:  You are in our thoughts and prayers constantly and you have the support of many of our friends and family as well! Keep being so strong for your little guy! :) He is blessed with an amazing family!
Kelly & Brian Kohr:  I continue to pray for Gavin and your entire family...you have so much support that I know he will pull through. Is there something that we could do if we raised money towards his warming bed? We will do anything that we can to help. We Love You!!!!
Renata:  I've been asking the Lord for a miracle...
I do know how difficult and worrisome this situation is for you!
May God renew your strength, your joy and your hope today!
    Blessings!
Matthew and Amy:  Thanks for the update. We've been wondering how things went with the procedure on Tuesday. Hopefully the GJ tube has more success than its predecessors. We'll be praying about that and the warming bed. That would be awesome if they could help you.
Fava Family:  Strongly praying for Gavin's health to improve and for him to regain his strength.
Evy:  I am praying that Gavin will start to thrive. I hope you can get the warming bed. I know this must very hard for you at this time.
