It's been a long week...
Gavin has had a tough week. He has been struggeling with his feeds and his weight has continued to go down. We were really hopeing that this g-tube would really make a differance but so far things have not begun to get better. We have changed his formula to half strength and his rate has been lowered, which means that he is a lot more comfortable but also that he is not getting as many calories. We haven't seen him looking this bad in a long time- and that's really hard to see.
On a positive note we had our Home Care Agency come out to the house today and do an intake for Gavin's care. I am feeling pretty good about our decision to get outside help. Also Gavin's Dr. let us know that his liver numbers looked still further improved with the AST only very slightly elevated. We go to Clinic next week where Gavin will have his G-tube adjusted and we also have an appointment with his Primary Doctor.
Pray for a heat wave this summer! Gavin needs the warmth to grow!Add a comment:

Welcome Home Gavin! So begins our new life with being able to see Gavin's full face. We are so glad to be home. We spent the morning showing Madi Gavin's new boo boo and making sure all her babies have a similar tube. Gavin is back up to is full feed of 25cc's an hour. He is still only able to tolerate 3/4 strength formula but now that he can get his full day's feed without pulling out his NG - this should make a difference.
We have a long road ahead us. Gavin is now weighing less than he did back in November, which means that he has not gained any weight in almost 4 1/2 months. Another issue that we are exloring is his hemoglobin levels. Is it trending down because of blood draws and iron deficiency or is it due to his underlying condition? He has been having increased apnea along with the bradycardia, which is mostly due to his hypothermia at night. Neurologicaly he looks so great! For those of you who have seen him you know that he doesn't miss a thing! Our hope is that now that he can get his caloric needs met more effectivly he will have more energy to use for his physical development.
Gavin is such a strong little guy and we are hopeful that someday this will all be a faint memory! Thanks again for your support during these past few weeks. Hopefully our updates will be a little more infrequent as no news is great news!
Be sure to check out his new pictures and video clips. Take note of his new shoes!Comments:AuntPatUncleDonAmandaMelissa: This web site is so great. I love being able to see you Gavin! I wanted to take this time and ask all of you to please pray for a little girl and her family that we have gotten connected with over this past month. She is a very sick little girl and at this hour is fighting for her life. She is in need of a true touch from the Lord. Her mom and dad have been fighting so hard for her and they are very tired and scared right now. Please take a second to say a pray Ally. If you want to know more about her situation you can find out more at allyheintz.aboutmybaby.com.
Gavin is doing well and I will be sure to update more tomorrow.Comments:Bill & Ruby Wilson: JESUS TOUCH LITTLE ALLY.Add a comment:

We just wanted to let everyone know that the transfusion went well yesterday. We received a call sayng that GI wants to get an additonal CBC before we go to the OR today. His Hemoglogin needs to be above 10 to continue foward. Pray that he is way up and this will happen! We stayed down here at the RM House last night and Gavin and I had a nice time playing and singing. His sweet spirit gives me such inspiration to keep fighting for him and gives me hope for the future.

We were informed today that Gavin will need to be transfused on Monday before the surgery. As long as he has no adverse reactions to the blood we can still go to the OR on Tuesday. Thankfully we do not need to be admitted on monday and we may possibley stay at the Ronald McDonald House to avoid the travel back to duPont on Tuesday. Gavin stoped his IV antibiotic yesterday so he is all on his own these next few days. He is back down to 11lbs so we need this to happen! I'm feeling pretty good about things and Adam and I both just want to get this over with!
Comments:Jason and Kristen: We are praying and believing for a complete healing for Gavin! Adam and I are happy to say that we brought our little guy home. We are not so happy to say that the surgry was cancelled...again! There was a communication error made between the GI department and the OR and Gavin was not off of his feeds long enough to get the G-tube. This was so frusterating for me becasue I spent the entire day preparing myself for this as I still am so uneasy about having this done. When they came in and told me that is was cancelled I felt that my emotions were thrown up and then smashed back down. They mostly likely would not be able to get him in untill next week and we did not want to keep him down at duPont for risk of infection and also just being away from home.
For now we are home on IV meds, which should clear the rest on his infection. We are also working with duPont to work out the details of our home care.
What a journey this has been...Comments:La Trease: I am glad to hear you are all home. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.Amanda, Missy, and Aunti pat: We are so glad you guys are all home again! You will continue to be in our prayers as always. We love you all so much! Gavin has now had two negative blood cultures, which means that he is a go for his G-tube surgery. He is looking much better and we look foward to coming home most likely, if there are no complications, on Friday. We also have decided to have some home nursing throughout the week, which should take some of the pressures off of Adam and I. This was a huge step for me as most of you know I am a total control freak! I think it is in the best interest of Gavin as well as Adam, Madi and myself. I am looking foward to giving Madi more of my time and energy, she deserves it!
Thanks for all your encouraging notes! They are a real help to us.Comments:Don and Judy Moyer: Glad to hear that the G tube will soon be in place....we are also glad to hear that you will be getting some help via a nurse...hang in, you two are remarkable and your little guy is a real trooper. Continued prayers.Lisa and Michael: Wonderful news! We will still have you all in our prayers. So glad everything is a go for the surgery! Gavin is a tough little guy! :) Way to go on getting extra help- you need it and deserve it!!! Much love, Lisa and MichaelLois and Pap Owens: You are always in our prayers. We're so happy to hear this good news and we send our love.Matthew & Amy: Hey A&K,
Glad to head that the G-tube is a go, and that the bacteria is gone. I know you will be happy once he is no longer able to pull the tube out of his nose and rob himself of his cals. Karen way to go on letting the nurse step in, hopefully you'll get some rest while your at it. (You've definitely earned it.) Once you are all back under one roof and settled, we want to hang out again. We love you all! ~Matthew & Amy DaviesEvy: I am so happy for the good news. I will continue to pray for your family as you continue to make

To duPont Children's Hospital we go...
Last night Gavin was just not acting right and was giving Adam and I a real scare. He had some vomiting and was breathing very rapidly. We took him to the ER around 1am and when we arrived he had spiked a fever of 105. His cultures just came back positive indicating that he has another line infection (Gram Negative Rodd). On top of that he also tested positive for the flu. With Gavin being so frail somthing like the flu can be very dififuclt for his weak body to handle. He is looking the worst he has looked in a long time and we hope to see some progress this stay. When possible we hope to get the G-tube placed while we are down here, which will hopefully ensure he receives the calories he requires.
Keep Madi and Adam in your prays as we just spent the last week readjusting to home life and getting Madi back on track. She is a resiliant little girl and Adam and I so greatful for that. I think it's harder on me than her!
On a positive note, the transfustion went very well and his Hemoglobin jumped from a 6 to a 10.

I recieved a call from our Doctor at Dupont yesterday saying that Gavin's Hemoglobin is low and that he needs some blood. So once again we will making our trip to Delaware tomorrow for a blood transfusion. I am so happy that they decided to give him some blood becasue he looks so blue/gray, which is a scary thing to see. This was something that I expected so I'm not to bothered by it. It is a farily simple process and we should be able to come home the same day if all goes well.
As for other news... Adam and I have made the decison to go ahead with the G-tube. Since comeing home last week Gavin has lost quite a bit of weight. I'm offically calling him my little Houdinie! He has learned how to pull out his NG so skillfully that he even has me stumped. Hopefully the G-tube will help him to get the food he needs and lets pray that he doesn't find his new "toy" anytime soon. I don't have a date yet for the surgery but hopefull it will be in the very near future.
We offically have the greatest family and friends in the world! Thanks to all who do everything from watch our little princess to give us hugs and smiles!Comments:Mary Alice Carpenter: God Bless all of you. I am a friend of Grandpa Jim and Grandma Linda and think about your entire family all the time. Remember that prayers do allow miracles to happen and never give up your hopes and dreams.
