We are home -- but not without a little drama added to our already chaotic life. Right before Gavin was discharged Madison fell and cracked her head open requiring 5 staples to close. We just always have to go out with a bang! Gavin is doing much better. He is home on IV antibiotics, which should clear the line of all infection. He is looking very good, a little puffy but that is par for the course with Gavin being sick.
We are so excited to spend Christmas at home as a family. Please keep in you hearts all the families that are not so lucky and will be spending their holiday either at their child's bedside or mourning their passing. Please cherish every moment with your family -- you are so blessed!

Hi everyone it's Gavin! I'm feeling so much better and mommie told me that my fever broke this morning. They found out what kinda buggies were in my body and now can give me the right medicine. Today was a rough day and I've had to give mommie some extra smiles -- my big sister it so loud, she hurts my ears.
I've had fun these past few day seeing all my girlfriends here at this place, not to mention I get some extra tubes to chew on, but I'm ready to go home and play.
They told my mommie today that if I stay fever free and no more buggies grow on my cultures, I get to go home tomorrow. Gosh, I sure did give mommie and daddy some excitement right before Christmas.
Thanks for talking to Jesus about me and my family. I can't believe how many people love me -- It's great!
Love,
GaviComments:Mary Alice Carpenter: Thank you God for helping the staff find Gavin's reason for his fever. Now make him better so his Mommy, Daddy and Big Sister can have a Blessed Christmas. Gavin's blood culture came back positive. Now we just have to wait until the bacteria is identified and he can begin the proper IV antibiotics. Gavin is still running a fever, though not as high as the previous 24 hours. Looks like this might not be a long stay but dare I say we will be coming home soon.

So many of you have asked for an update on Gavin so I figured it was about time to let you in on Gavin's "exciting" life. Things are going fairly well. We have been home now for four weeks without any major infections or sicknesses. Gavin continues to get bigger and bigger. For those of you who are new to this site I encourage you to look at our photo's that were posted back in May -- what a change! Since our discharge in June, from his last lengthy inpatient stay, Gavin has really begun to soar. We have found that if Gavin has the energy to develop he will -- why didn't we think of the dextrose infusion earlier, as that is what has made a huge difference in his energy level and development.
Areas of concern continue to be his feeds. Although they are up from earlier this month they are still minimal and he is still dependent on the TPN. His sugars, again, although improved are still a struggle. His drainage from his belly continues to contain fluid from his small bowel, which should not be there and causes belly distension and pain.
Life with Gavin continues to be wonderful yet ever so exhausting. This past month we have made weekly, sometimes twice weekly trip to the hospital for repairs on his Central Line and GJ Tube. It's a long drive and it just gets old very fast! Please continue to pray for the strength our our little family. Although we cherish the time we have at home together, home life can be just as crazy if not more than hospital life.
Overall Gavin is doing great! He is pushing forward beyond what was thought he could do. I remember just 6 months ago having discussions about end of life and other hard topics and now I'm consumed by thoughts of how to keep by toddler from chewing through his tubes and attacking his sister! God is so faithful, we feel that it is only through him that we are still able to smile and laugh.
We encourage everyone to cherish this holiday season. Thank God everyday for life.
The Owens FamilyComments:carrie-anne & family: Christmas blessings and everyday blessings to you. it is always great to hear of theAmy Basciani: Hi all,
It is so nice to hear you are getting the hectic, crazy family time at home we all deserve!! Keep up the good work, Gavin. I have not heard from you for a while and wondered how things have been. We had our big appt. at CHOP, on Friday. Also my computer was down for a while, so i was unable to check emails. I hope Gavin continues to do well.Like i said before, it would be a pleasure to have all of you guys stop in for a break, on your way home from Dupont.Anytime!!!Take Care.
AmyLisa, Michael and Josiah: Karen and Adam, it was so wonderful to see your beautiful family at Thanksgiving! You are an inspiration to all of us and we are happy to hear things are looking up for the most part. You will still continually be in our prayers. God bless you this Christmas!!! We love you!Mary Alice Carpenter: The pictures are priceless. Gavin and Madison sure are growing. Adam and you look wonderful with all the stress you have faced. God surely has blessed you all. Prayers continue and may your Christmas be blessed with love and good Health for all!!!Mark and KayAnn: We are happy to hear great news. We understand the need of continued prayer, so we will. But we are happy to hear there are normal childhood moments and that is the best news. Praise God!The Rich Family: Great update. Thanks for taking the time to do it. Excellent news still thinking about you guys. Have a terrific holiday. May your New Year bring less trips to hospital and rapid growth for Gavin and many special times with all of you.Lisa Stone: Thank you for the update. I think we all are encouraged not only by Gavin, but the whole family. We will continue to pray and I hope that you can enjoy theseChristine: I have been following your family story for some time now and it never ceases to amaze me the strength you all have. I hope you, as a couple, can spend a little time alone once in awhile to just unwind a bit. It is stories like yours that make so many of us take a second look at our lives and realize that we really have minor problems and we need to quit whining. I really admire you as a family.Add a comment:
